Information

Plastic bags have become almost standard in pet food packaging to categorize products such as dry food and snacks. Plastic bags with great graphics, barrier and durability, as well as being easy to open and close frequently offer many benefits.

The main disadvantage is that it doesn't last long. Plastic bags' numerous layers of ingredients that contribute to their benefits make them almost impossible to recycle. Or, as my colleague Tim Wall put it, “These bold ingredients and bright colors may guarantee freshness compared to human food, but they may be recycled bears.” At Clemson University, the packaging as part of the Petfood Essentials CONNECT • Short ED course introduced at the end of 2020.

"Especially in the plastics market, you rarely find plastics that you work with that have all the properties that you need," says Whiteside. It is usually a multi-layer or co-extruded laminate or adhesive that is very expensive and difficult, so there is usually no significant recycling flow.

In fact, the Pet Stability Coalition (PSC) says the cost of recycling is greater than the value of the plastic in the package. "As a result, the PSC estimates that more than 99 percent of pet food bags in the United States end up in landfills rather than being recycled," the press release said.

The same can happen with paper pet food bags that contain non-paper materials, e.g. B. Clear plastic windows that allow consumers to see the product inside.

Packaging recyclability and stability are becoming increasingly important to consumers in general. In a global survey of pet owners in early 2020, Euromonitor found that 60% of them chose "recyclable" as a trusted product label, and unrelated claims such as eco-friendly and local resources. Both were close to 55%, and the sources were stable even when in 50% (Interestingly, the other options for claiming the label were clearly irrelevant, including natural and organic, and these owners found recyclable and eco-friendly pets more reliable.)

Euromonitor data appeared in Kemin webinar on sustainability in animal nutrition. Regarding sustainable packaging, the moderator said that alternatives to plastic bags could include packaging made from recycled materials, 100% recyclable or compostable packaging, and biodegradable and reusable containers.

All of these are now alternatives and are being tested by pet food companies and packaging suppliers, but I think it's fair to say such testing is at an early stage. A recent - successful - example of PSC's Flex Forward is a "Return Packaging Retail Pilot" launched in August 2020 in partnership with Earth Animal, a manufacturer of pet food, candy and other pet products. , And Pets. Nutritionists, pet food distributors.

The program has completed its first phase with a goal of applying 5,000 to 5,000 pieces of flexible plastic food packaging for pets, the PSC said. To date, more than 120 independent pet retailers in Oregon and Washington have received flexible plastic pet food collection bins and pet bags from pet owners. (I believe that applies to products sold in these stores.) Participating retailers also received retail partner training, digital content, and incentives to encourage pet owners to box their products.

Phase 2 of Flex Forward will test the recyclability of collected materials to produce recycled plastics that can be used to make other pet care products such as beds or toys, marketed, or donated to animal rescue services across the United States. Nationwide (To learn more about sustainable packaging in the pet industry, visit the Unpacked21 PSC Virtual Event on February 23-24, 2021).

New initiatives worth getting excited about

Flex Forward points to recent initiatives, such as TerraCycle, that several pet food companies have been using for several years to encourage the take-back of plastic bags from their products for possible recycling. But this was very limited, like the TerraCycle Loop program, which allowed consumers to refill bins for specific commodities. Ditto for pet food packaging that is biodegradable or biodegradable, supplied by multiple suppliers and tested by a handful of pet feed or treatment companies.

However, I find it inspiring that these types of initiatives and experiments are underway, and I hope that one or more will succeed and eventually reach a large budget and scale to make a real impact. Other interesting ideas were put forward. Wall proposed creating a pet food container that would have pet food wrapped in melted packaging, packaging that is edible only (unlike the Tide Pod challenge!). Whiteside suggested that a gel such as fish gelatin or a cellulose-based substance might be suitable. The capsules can be sold in a rechargeable container and possibly delivered to your home.

Given the growing popularity of pet food and home delivery services, this concept seems plausible. The point is that sustainability issues like plastic packaging can be solved with enough attention, collaboration, scientific experimentation, and budgeting. This is something to be happy about.
